A maiden was given a map to descend down into the depths of her innermost being to discover who and what she is really made from.
Her time to cross the threshold into her inner underworld was marked by the first flow of the crimson tides, the season of womb winter when her womb shed her first menstrual blood onto the white snow.
This path of descent would be marked with the wisdom of women before her who had crossed these thresholds time and time again, with every shedding of the womb, every black moon, and every winter season.
Through descending into her inner underworld, the maiden would meet her darker nature, her primal wild self, the guardian keeper of death and all of her mysteries, and through this reunion she would learn to trust and weave more of her power into the world as love itself.
These descents would deepen her roots to receive the nourishment of Goddess, so that she could blossom authentically into a sovereign lover, mother, queen, priestess, and eventually wise crone.
Our priestesses became prostitutes, our blood became a curse, our humanity became sinful, and the Earth wisdom ways of Goddess became demonized and feared. Women no longer consciously descended as a magical initiation and avoided the fertile darkness where our power hides.
Which is why so many women find ourselves today, lost on the path of wild awakening, victims of external dark forces while blind to the inner dark sources, not knowing how to cross the thresholds of rebirth, turning against ourselves and demonizing the inner allies that are here to help us awaken, heal, bloom, rise, and graciously die to be reborn again.
We have arrived at a time in our collective story, when humanity has now descended into the dark abyss of underworld consciousness, into the blackness of the mystery where all is coming un-done to be re-born into a higher state of consciousness, where the feminine reclaims her rightful place on her throne once again.
We can fight this, or we can become Queens of this, ushering humanity home to the wild awakening of which we all belong.
To facilitate this great turning, it is time for all women to return to the gateway of descent, to reclaim the crown of self empowerment as Queens in service of love, and to re-weave our ancient pathways for our future generations, through the darkness, through the soil, through the womb, through the blood.
Truth can be burned and buried, but it never dies. It is hidden in our ancient mythologies, in the wisdom of nature, and in our sacred feminine bodies. We can retrieve this knowing for the redemption of our world now.

The dark, the shadow, Hell, the underword, were once all revered as sacred gateways into the mysteries.
“Hell” was in fact the womb gateway, bringing us into the void of all creation where we could reconnect with Source and rebirth ourselves through the fertile darkness, to shed our layers of no-longer-truth, and emerge more authentically aligned with the truest essence of our nature.
All feminine shamanic spiritual systems knew that one must descend before she could ascend, and that this voyage into the fertile underworld was in fact a doorway into the upperworld of cosmic light.
As our feminine mysteries went into hiding during the inquisitions and patriarchal takeover, over many generations most of us forgot these rites of passage once essential for a woman’s full embodiment as a spiritual and sensual being.
This journey was mapped in many of our ancient mythologies, most notably the poem The Descent of Inanna, the Sumerian Queen of Heaven who descends to Hell to meet her sister Ereshkigal the Queen of the Underworld, and the Homeric hymn of Persephone, the magical maiden of Greek mythos who is dragged down to the underworld by her father’s brother Hades.
For seven weeks in our Queen of the Underworld temple, we return to the mysteries of the rebirth rites hidden in the ancient mythologies of both Inanna and Persephone, as we resurrect our own embodied realization of the treasure that hides in our depths.
As Inanna descends we are invited to follow her lead, to dive into the inner waters of our own wild emotional depths, to dance with the shadow side and our lion headed twin, and to retrieve the treasure that hides down in the underworld.
With Persephone we retrace the distortions we have inherited about a woman’s descent in the hands of patriarchy, and we reclaim a new mythology that empowers us as sovereign beings in the here and now.
Together we will rebirth and resurrect, in and through the dark, as one who not only rises but who resources herself from within the depths. We reclaim our thrones as Queens of our own lives.

Over the course of our seven week temple together, we journey with the most iconic mythical underworld Queens, Inanna of Sumeria the sovereign Queen of Heaven who chooses to descend to Hell to meet her sister Ereshkigal, and Persephone of Greece the innocent young maiden who is dragged down to the underworld by her father’s brother Hades.
Through our mythological herstory transmissions, shamanic vision quests, feminine embodiment arts, rituals, and live ceremonies in our sacred sisterhood, we meet these Goddesses as doorways into our own innermost depths, to bring healing, empowerment, forgiveness, reclamation, and wholeness to everything that we have lived.
We repair the fractures and fragments inherited through a world that has forgotten the cyclical rebirthing feminine nature, as we remember the living breathing embodiment of the true benevolent Queen: She who has come to embrace all parts of herself as holy.

Preparing for the Journey, Arriving in Reverence
Before our journey begins, we will open into the wisdom of the underworld, Persephone, Inanna, and a woman’s rite to descend, to invite organic reflections upon our own initiatory journeys in this lifetime so far.
We arrive to the temple in reverence, through weaving the sacred energy transmission of the journey with our personal intentions, bringing them into form in our devotional altar, and making space in our schedule to descend.
We will also open into the whole stories of both Persephone and Inanna, through famous translations of the original poems of their descents, to give us an overall view and map of the journey we are about to take. In this sense, the entire journey moves back in time to meet us at the beginning as we move forward in time to meet the doorway of completion and final integration at the end.

How prepared were you for your first menstrual bleed? For your first sexual experience? For your emotional/psychic/spiritual deaths and rebirths? For meeting your shadow? For giving birth? For becoming a mother? For transitioning into menopause?

Opening the Doorway to the Depths, Releasing Layers of Self, Becoming Spiritually Naked
It can feel like a great paradox at times, that to feel safe in our own bodies and free to live our truth in the world, we will be called to return to the places of greatest distortion and dishonor. These places are the wastelands of our world where the feminine has been demonized, violated, or at the very least been neglected.
Descent is not only a process in the psyche, meeting our darker nature, it is also a process in the body, meeting the tenderness of our flesh and in particular our sexual anatomy. Fertility requires that we re-nourish the soil, through resting into the bottom of our beings, in the shadow yes, but also in the felt experience of our pelvis, our womb, and in the naturally descending gift of menstrual blood.
Descent does require a “getting naked” with ourselves, just as Inanna is stripped of layers of her ego and outer power in the world in order to be humble enough to enter the underworld. With Inanna and Persephone as our guides, we descend into the sensitivity of our bodies and we set aside our external identities to allow us the space to touch into the core of our being as our own fertile ground.

A long forgotten and utterly essential wisdom for a woman’s rite to walk safely and freely through this world, is the innerstanding that the feminine was the original gatekeeper to Hell. She was the Devil.
As the guardian of the womb, she was the keeper of the mysteries, and the one who would initiate us into our own power through the wild waves of our emotions, the currents of our sexual desires, and in the cyclical nature of our bodies to create life.
Through patriarchy, women were gaslighted into distrusting these powers as separate from God, and were exiled from the temples, forgetting that God and the temple itself were already inside of her own own body. The underworld is truly a place of regeneration and rejuvenation for new life, and this is Skeleton Woman’s one and only agenda: to strip us fully enough that we surrender to life inside of ourselves, which is our only real power, so that we can be reborn in the truth of who and what we are.
In the underworld we meet with the depths of our own alchemical magic, which requires the embrace of our grief and rage, the water and fire of life. It is indeed through feeling it all and becoming the safe hands of Goddess that can honor and hold it all, that we receive the blessed nectar of our authentic medicine and receive our truest treasure.

Rising After Death, Re-negotiating Ourselves With the Light
Once we surrender to the underworld and receive her magical rejuvenating powers, the blessed compassion and unconditional love of the womb of life, we may not want to return. We may wish to stay bundled up in our cocoon forever.
Yet, there is an innate impulse, the impulse of life, the seed that is destined to crack open and burst forth from deep within the dark fertile soil. Just as menstruation does not last forever, neither does the descent, and eventually we are called to slowly rise back up into the light.
As we do, we meet once again with the layers of our identities we have shed and stripped away in our descent, and we have the opportunity to either release what no longer fits, or to redefine how we wear these layers in a way that serves us now.
With Inanna, we rise back to the Queendom of Heaven, with this newfound power of the darkness, ruling from a deep intimacy with our most loving truth. With Persephone we feel the difference between the light that has never descended and the light that has been deepened and refined in the dark.

Trusting Natural Cycles, Becoming More Whole in ‘All of the Worlds’
Wisdom is the path of knowing through not knowing, and it is through our descents into the unknown that we come to know ourselves and we come to know life. This is not something that happens one time, though there certainly are cycles or seasons of particularly intense initiations and rebirths. Rather, it is a journey we return to over and over again through the movement of the wheel of life.
The feminine nature, the true keeper of the wisdom of life and of death, is cyclical. She reveals that there are no beginnings and there are no ends. Through our descents and resurrections we come to realize that we are continually spiraling through life and death as we become more whole.
Persephone rises from the underworld in the spring, and she descends again in the autumn. Our wombs bleed into the ground, and then we become fertile and ripe, until we cycle that path enough times that we become the keeper of the wisdom ourselves, the crone who no longer bleeds. We die and return to the Earth and the seeds that we planted become new life. All is eternal. This is the loving power of life.

Camille Willemain is the founder of Earth Daughters mystery school, an energy worker and embodiment facilitator, a writer and storyteller, and a lover of all expressions of the feminine nature.
In 2012 she moved to the jungle of Costa Rica, which began her initiation into the feminine through her relationship with the wild and discovery of Mesoamerican shamanism. On that path she traveled in over 25 countries across the world writing a blog read by millions of people and training in dance meditation, yogic arts, tantra, metaphysics, energy healing, breathwork, and learning through her own innate guidance how to listen to the ancient voices of the Earth.
Since 2015 she has been facilitating women’s healing work around the world, and in 2019 birthed her online women’s mystery school Earth Daughters as an homage to her European shamanic ancestors, her past lifetimes in the priestess temples, and her intimate relationship with nature.

I have been on a long, initiatory journey and have spent a great deal of the last 5 years traversing the underworld alone. I have had to be my own community and own grandmother in many ways. On one hand, it is true what they say - we must take our initiatory journeys alone. But what they don't tell you, is that it is possible to make the journey alone, while held within a circle of profoundly amazing women embarking on their own journeys.
